An equally strange and sexy debut, Zaba's most audacious moments suggest Glass Animals will be an even more compelling act next time around. The band is often at its most fascinating when it conveys the chilled-out sophistication of dance music via rock, as on the low-slung groove of "Toes" or the rippling former single "Black Mambo," which makes the most of the jazzy androgyny of Bayley's vocals. "Intruxx"'s looping beat sounds like a trip-hop rhythm translated into live percussion that sounds right at home next to "Wyrd"'s bubbly electronics. It’s been said before, but it’s something of an inescapable truth Glass Animals couldn’t be much closer to Alt-J. All of Zaba is coated in dripping reverb that gives it a slippery feel that matches the effortless way Glass Animals slide between electric and electronic instrumentation. Bayley, who produced the album, lavishes these songs with sonic details that are almost hallucinatory: the echoes that grace opening track "Flip" suggest a slow-motion reverie before the song locks into a louder, and arguably more predictable, rock groove, while "Pools" lives up to its name with its aquatic sound. However, Zaba also shows what David Bayley and company bring to this style. On their full-length debut, Glass Animals recall more than a few of their contemporaries: Foals, Alt-J, and especially Wild Beasts spring to mind as touchstones for the band's lush yet challenging mix of indie and electronic sounds ("Hazey," meanwhile, suggests a collaboration between Massive Attack and Antony Hegarty). That is until closer 'JDNT' lumbers in, a song with a radio-friendly chorus that's signposted more heavily than the portaloos at a festival.Purchase and download this album in a wide variety of formats depending on your needs. It is the third song on their debut studio album, ZABA, and was released on April 17th, 2014 as the album's third single. On May 16th, the band announced their first single Life Itself from the album on BBC Radio 1. The album features the breakout single Gooey which garnered over 50 million Spotify listens.

It's all a pleasant listen, with 'Toes' presenting a peak during the album's latter half. 'Pools' is a song by the British indie rock band Glass Animals. How to Be a Human Being is the sophomore full length from Oxford, England based electronica group Glass Animals following 2014s Zaba. 'Hazey' is particularly fleshy and rich, while 'Cocoa Hooves' harbours the hand-clap to great effect. And their insanity, while great in their interviews, sounds ridiculous over a sensual backing track – 'Black Mambo' features the lyrics "Tickle head gin can take your throne/ Pump your veins with gushing gnomes."Įarthy clacks made by wooden instruments that you'd find in a primary school percussion box give Zaba a Tropicool vibe, and sounds a bit like Vampire Weekend being forced through vaginal walls. At their best, they swirl delicate electronica with flirtatiousness. Glass Animals don't seem to realise that the climax of a song doesn't have to be so overtly climatic. Having produced two albums that primarily explored the lives of others (the 2014 debut 'Zaba' and its 2016 follow-up 'How to Be a Human Being,' the latter of which is based on a different character in each of the 11 songs), their new release signals a dramatic shift in how the Oxfordian quartet creates an album. There's a portion of song tacked on the end to satisfy wayfarer wearers, and it feels completely unnecessary. And then, two and a half minutes in, everything goes wrong. Dave Bayley's voice overcomes it's own Englishness to project come-hither tones over efficient yet heavy bass. Opener 'Flip' is slippery, mellow, and sexy. It actually sounds a bit like Wild Beasts having an orgy on a water-bed, and although that doesn't immediately sound so disappointing, it very much is. Their drawings and answers were so terrifying, insane and wonderful that I thought their debut album, Zaba, would be a grotesque carnival soundtrack. I suspect it was rendered using Microsoft Paint.
They drew a picture of a creature – half llama, half unicorn – wearing Nike blazers and eating a watermelon. So, instead of doing any real journalism, I asked questions like "If you had your own crystal menagerie, what animals would it house?". When I interviewed Glass Animals in 2012, there was very little information about them available.
